THE “JOURNEY OF FAITH” BEGINS AT HOPEWELL Our Past Hopewell Baptist Church was established in 1876 with fifteen charter members. The first church conference held at Hopewell was March 10, 1876. At that conference they elected their first pastor, D. J. Maddox, decided to purchase one-half dozen Baptist Hymnals at $3.00 each, and they collected a special offering! At conference in 1877, there was a motion and a second that a church building be built. By 1885 the church was relocated to its present location (the old brick building) and rebuilt. Since then, there have been multiple building campaigns to remodel and update the facilities. Do you think any of those saints could ever have imagined that the Sixes community and surrounding area would be what it is today? And yet we are who we are today because of the saints of the past, and the hope and commitment of each Hopewell Baptist member. Our Challenge Once again we are challenged to build in order to accommodate our growing church needs. We are faced with our biggest challenge ever in building an auditorium and classroom space that will accommodate our growing needs. The call to build is our response to the overwhelming blessings of God upon Hopewell Baptist. It involves each of us determining to obey the voice of God. Currently every room is used two times on Sunday for Bible study classes as well as two worship services to accommodate our Sunday morning attendance. Our existing facilities are being used to full capacity and often beyond their intended use. I believe we have been good stewards of the use of our facilities, but I believe it is time to build in order to faithfully serve the people God continues to bring to Hopewell. Our Solution As the people of Hopewell, we understand God’s mission for us is to grow, expand and build upon this ministry according to God’s good purpose. With that in mind, we have done a study of our needs for the next five years. First things first--we have made the commitment to eliminate our $1.2 million debt. The new building program will involve building a 1000 plus seat auditorium that will be multipurpose in function. It will accommodate our worship, recreation and fellowship. Beneath the worship center will be a state-of-the-art children’s building to accommodate our growing Children’s Ministry. Our staff offices and administrative space will be a part of the new building allowing our Student Ministries to enlarge. And then finally needed recreational areas such as ball fields and play areas will be addressed along with much needed additional parking. As you can see, this building plan involves almost every area of need in our ministry at Hopewell Baptist Church. I am simply asking every member to do his/her part. By working together we will see the hand of God move in a great way. Because I care, Pastor Norman
